Backgammon is a game that combines skill with luck and intuition. This game has stood the test of time. It came to be played for the first time around 3000 B.C. Backgammon is a board game played between two players. The board is demarcated into two sides. On the board are 15 pieces or stones of each player. In total, there are 30 such pieces. They are called “checkers” in Backgammon. The board of Backgammon has certain points on it. The checkers are positioned at these points. The game begins with the players rolling the dice. Depending on the number that has been rolled by the dice, the player will re-locate his checkers. The aim of the player is to first gather all his checkers on his side of the board. After all his checkers are on his part of the board, the player “bears off” the checkers. This is nothing but simply removing the checkers from the board one at a time. The winner of the game is the player who is able to bear off all his checkers first.

The competitive edge is added by a provision through which the opponent can take off the player’s checkers. If the opponent manages to land his checker on a point where the player’s checker is placed, he can take off that particular checker of the player. In such an instance, the checker thus displaced is taken off. It must remain on the bar of the board till the player is able to retrieve it. In order to get a checker back, the dice is rolled by the player. Only if the dice rolls the number of the point that is open, will the checker return.
