The game of Bingo came about in Italy under the name of Lotto is about the sixteenth century. From there it made its way to the French court during the eighteenth century. It entered America for the first time a while later, in the beginning of the twentieth century.
The journey of Bingo began with bingo being known as Beano. This is due to the fact that the word Beano was yelled out by the people playing whenever they finished a combination or formation of numbers. In this version of the game, the numbers ranging from one and ninety were shouted out by enthusiastic players. The people playing were given cards with numbers randomly positioned on them and the concept was that they had to finish a combination of numbers decided in advance. The first person to complete this was declared the winner.
The origins of Bingo can be traced back to Edwin Lowe, an American who came across the game in Atlanta Georgia. He, together with a professor of mathematics changed the game about a little and re vamped it into a game meant for families. In a short span of time the game was enthusiastically accepted through out the country. Even the church, as well as various communities started to use Bingo as a means to generate funds for their activities. Bingo was, in a manner of speaking, an accepted form of gambling which was legal in nature.
Bingo has been modified and adapted into various educational forms. In current times countries that form a part of Europe make use of the game of Bingo as a tool to teach and educate pre school children. Interestingly enough, the game of bingo is also used today as a method for helping young children to understand mathematics. It is available in many different versions as a tool for subjects such as spelling and teaching history.
