The various betting options available to the players in Craps make it a scintillating game. While the common line and come bets are popular among most of the Craps regulars, the single roll bets are less known. Even players who have played this game for years may be unaware of this form of betting in Craps.
The most important single roll bet is the Field bet. This bet is also one of the simplest bets in the game of Craps. Also the field bet is the most popular one because it has the lowest House edge of all the single roll bets. A player who is laying a field bet predicts that the dice will roll one of the following numbers- 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12. The player wins if in the next roll of the dice any one of these number appears. The casinos have different payouts depending on which number has been rolled. Thus, the number that has been rolled also determines the House edge. The payout, if the dice rolls a 3, 4, 9, 10 or 11, is generally 1 to 1. This makes it an even money bet. However, if the dice rolls a 2 or 12 the payout increases to 2 to 1. Thus, the House edge is 5.56%. Another payout scheme that certain casinos follow is paying even money for a roll of 3, 4, 9, 10 or 11 and 2 to 1 for a roll of 2. Such casinos pay 3 to 1 if the dice rolls a 12. This cuts the House edge down to 2.78%.
It must be said that although the field bet carries the least House edge in single roll bets, the edge is still higher than line and come bets. The field bet is a fast-paced bet with great payouts but the House edge spoils the fun.
