Poker is a very popular game and is played throughout the world. At first, ‘Poker’ was known by the name of ‘Bluff’. Poker is a national vying game of United States of America and is of French-American origin.
It carries five cards based on betting on who has the best hand. In this game, players bet on whom will hold the a combination of best cards by continuously raising the bets until any of the following occurs first:
- At the time of showdown, the person holding the best cards combination wins all the stakes; or
- One of the players quits the game, and the last person who was supposed to show his cards wins the pot.
It is therefore a very good chance for one of the players to simply win the game, though he/she does not deserve it.
Thus, we see that Poker is not an ordinary game. One can deal with as many cards as one desires, but finally the one who catches up with a valid combination of five cards wins the game.
Poker Variants
Poker game has many variations. These variations were created in the United States somewhere in the early 90s. Most of the games are based on these variations. However, just knowing the variation is simply not enough. The procedure to what hands should be used, the total number of rounds of betting, and the types and number of cards to be played and actions to be taken in the course of the game should be very well known.
The betting structure can be classified into the following categories:
- Draw Poker
- Stud Poker
- Community-card Poker
Draw Poker is a game in which players deal with a complete hand, and then replace those cards with improved ones. The most commonly used hand is that of a five-card draw.
Stud Poker includes games wherein each player gets a combo of cards faced-up and cards faced-down. These are mostly Seven-card stud and Five-card stud. Community-card Poker is a game where every player has an incomplete hidden card which is further combined with shared faced-up cards. Commonly used community-card poker is Texas Hold’em and Omaha Hold’em.
Many players create informal variants in home games during the course of playing them. These games are not much popular amongst the existing variants, as those variants were specifically created in the United States to be played for the long time. However, players with similar tastes can always look for or adapt to the ad-hoc variants.
